Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2024: AlphaFold and the Protein Folding Revolution
Demis Hassabis and John Jumper of Google DeepMind shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for solving one of biology's greatest challenges.
The 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Demis Hassabis and John Jumper of Google DeepMind, along with David Baker of the University of Washington, for their revolutionary work on protein structure prediction and computational protein design.
AlphaFold2, DeepMind's deep learning system, achieved near-experimental accuracy in predicting how amino acid sequences fold into three-dimensional protein structures β a problem that had stumped biochemists for over 50 years. The system has since been used to predict the structures of over 200 million proteins, effectively mapping the protein universe and enabling drug discovery at unprecedented speed.
David Baker's work on de novo protein design β computationally creating proteins with functions that don't exist in nature β complements AlphaFold by enabling researchers to design new molecular machines, vaccines, and enzyme catalysts from scratch. Together, these advances are transforming drug development, materials science, and our fundamental understanding of life.
