Booker Prize 2024: James by Percival Everett Takes the Crown

Percival Everett's James — a radical retelling of Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn told from the perspective of the enslaved man Jim — won the 2024 Booker Prize, the most prestigious literary award in the English-speaking world.

The novel's central conceit is that Jim, who speaks 'plantation dialect' around white people, is in fact deeply literate and philosophically sophisticated — code-switching as a survival mechanism. The book is simultaneously a historical novel, a meditation on language and power, a thriller, and a dark comedy. The Booker judges called it 'a work of profound moral urgency that reshapes the American literary canon.'

Everett, at 68, is one of American literature's most prolific and formally experimental writers, with over 30 books to his name. James represented a popular and critical breakthrough that brought mainstream recognition to a long-underappreciated career.
